I would very much appreciate it. Another gentleman is trying to help
me but I think I'm failing to communicate properly.
I have the following setup:
[satellite modem] <-> [win2k] <-> [ linux fw ] <-> [windows clients ]
The [satellite modem] and [win2k] machine are not relevant but I
simply listed them for completion. :)
[linux fw]
* squid
* DNS cache-only server
I have defined a bogus CNAME entry in my cache server for a test site:
qa-one.foobar.com
From the linux box, I can 'ping qa-one.foobar.com' and I get the
correct IP address. From the (cruddy) windows machines, I can also
'ping qa-one.foobar.com' and I get the correct IP address.
When I go to http://qa-one.foobar.com on my web browser (on the
windows machine), I get the following error from SQUID:
The following error was encountered:
Unable to determine IP address from host name for qa-one.foobar.com
The dnsserver returned:
Name Error: The domain name does not exist.
This means that:
The cache was not able to resolve the hostname presented in the URL.
Check if the address is correct.
I have tried, per the other gentleman's suggestion, to create an
/etc/hosts entry on [linux fw] but this wasn't successful.
Also, when I do an 'nslookup qa-one.foobar.com' I get the following --
which I think is a clue:
Server: master.divideview.com
Address: 192.168.1.1
Non-authoritative answer:
Name: <<CNAME value as I entered in my cache-only server>>
Address: <<actual IP address of the CNAME>>
Aliases: qa-one.foobar.com.mydomain.com
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ - I think this is what screws things up.
It's important for me to use 'qa-one.foobar.com' because the apache
server on the other end expects that rather than,
qa-one.foobar.com.mydomain.com (which the other gentleman rightly
pointed out does work).
In a nutshell, I'd like SQUID to understand 'qa-one.foobar.com' and
not pay attention to 'qa-one.foobar.com.mydomain.com'
Thx a lot for any help and I apologize for the length of this message.
:)
