i had the same problem with
ie6sp1 - squid with ncsa_auth
There seems to be a patch from microsoft available but it isn´t public. You
can request it if you habe a
support contract with ms. Or you have to wait for sp2 then ms will integrate
the patch.
I found a solution without this patch and it works in my combination with
ncsa_auth. It could be that it
also works for you with smb_auth.
disable the show friendly HTTP errors item in
Tools/Internet Options/Advanced

Related to a bug in IE SP1, problem has been discussed
rather frequent recently. Seems MS has a fix upon customer request.
