[squid-users] Downloads Failing

I have squid setup on my home network (Linux Mandrake server, W98 and W2000
workstations, IE6) and generally speaking it works very well. The problem is
that frequently downloads fail (especially large ones), they just seem to
stop and hang, never completing. If I bypass squid then the downloads work
fine. I've checked the logs and there is no problem recorded.

I require all user to log in to squid using SMB authentication so that I can
log and restrict access by user (using SquidGuard).

Any help would be much appreciated.
