Caching is very very slow..Pls help urgently

I am using PIII 650, 64 MB of RAM running Red Hat 6.1. I am using squid
2.2 STABLE 5. Caching is very very slow. Atleast 75% slower than MS
Proxy 2.0. My cache_mem is 8 MB and Cache_dir 700 16 256.

I am new in squid. What goes wrong ??? Pls help.
