Squid Cache aborts startup

I have a problem trying to start Squid 2.3STABLE on a mandrake 6.1 box. Here
is a snip from the squid.out file found in the squid root dir. This is also
the error message I get when trying to start it

FATAL: Unknown cache_dir type '/storage/proxy-cache'

Squid Cache (Version 2.3.STABLE1): Terminated abnormally.

Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 303

any ideas on how i fix this would be greatful.
