Which may or may not work for inlined images. An altogether better
solution (although not available yet) is to wait for HTTP/1.1 which
allows a cache to say "Hey this is maybe not current but it is the
newest I could get" via a HTTP header.

This of course requires an HTTP/1.1 compliant browser which inerprets
this kind of header and has its own way of alerting the user.
