It seems not. Probably because of those problems you found. Although
Solaris may have simply embeded GRE functionality into the network stack
like Linux and BSD did years ago and made it a non-issue.
Or is could just be identical setup in Solaris as in Linux or BSD since
they are all based on POSIX.
Also, Cisco devices can sometimes do L2 packet routing. So if you have
one able to and can plug Squid directly into the WCCP device you may be
able to work it without GRE tunnels.

working a config example page by you would be appreciated. Details on
how to get edit access to the wiki are on the front page.
