You can get RedHat also without paying that amount !
Just search the redhat website and you will find a link to download it !
The amount you pay, is for you to be able to download updates !
Of course you can do updates, but without paying it is a manual process where you havve to download each update manually and apply to the system, while paying the subscription, it is an automatic process where the RHN checks what is needed to be updated on your system and does it !
From my experience, FreeBSD seems to be very stable and much faster in performance compared to RedHat ! If you are a newbee, then start with redhat, and later move to freebsd !
