still no go :(

any other ideas on why this may not be working, because im at a loss of ideas

Many of those configure options is obsolete as Samba nowdays (since
Samba-3.0) provides the helper for winbind.

Remove the following configure options:
        --enable-ntlm-auth-helpers="winbind,SMB"
        --with-winbind-auth-chalenge
        --with-samba-sources="/root/samba_daily/samba3_release/"

and it should work better.

The helper to use in squid.conf is ntlm_auth from the Samba-3
installation. Otherwise things are pretty much the same.
