With Samba and MSIE browsers you can use the NTLM authentication scheme.
This never transmits the password over the wire (not even encrypted).

Or if you can accept having a local password file then you can use the
digest scheme. Or bug me to publish the digest LDAP helper which can store
the Digest passwords in LDAP (new attribute however, not the same as the
LDAP userPassword).
