Sound like the MTU size yes ....
Had the same, and set the MTU to 1600, and it worked, or check your:
request_body_max_size 1 MB
Change it to be like
request_body_max_size 10 MB

Works here thru squid 2.5.STABLE6 on RedHat.
Check system dependend weirdness in the FAQ for Linux.
- TCP/ECN may be; turn it off.
