Don't know - I've only ever used the Winbind helpers for this.

I do know that the Winbind helpers are well documented, and the setup is
straightforward. There are only two caveats on the Windows side:

1) If Anonymous Connections are blocked, you will need to specify a username
and password for winbind to use (how to do this is in the Winbind docs)

2) If you plan to use NTLM auth, make sure the server is not set to accept
NTLMv2 only - even with Samba 3, it seems to only use NTLMv1.
