[squid-users] FATAL: xmalloc: Unable to allocate 87380 bytes!

I recently encountered a memory issue with squid. When I ran top I noticed
the free memory was decreasing drastically. Once it got to 5029 squid
stopped for 2 minutes. The free memory increased back to 918316 and the
following message showed up in cache.log:

FATAL: xmalloc: Unable to allocate 87380 bytes!

Squid shut down at 4:11 and restated at 4:13 -- giving 2 minutes of down
time. What does "FATAL: xmalloc: Unable to allocate 87380 bytes!" mean and
what is the best way to fix this?
