getpwnam does not work with /etc/shadow.
PAM does work fine with /etc/shadow
Be sure to read the PAM helper manual on installation requirements. Some
experience of configuring PAM services also helps but usually it is
sufficient to simply copy the definition of an existing service such as
pop3..
