[squid-users] Is Squid used to increase the speed or used for bandwidth saving ?

Hi all,

May I ask a very basic question ?
Is Squid used to increase the speed or used for bandwidth saving ?

I'm using Squid 2.5 stable 3, and using PageSleuth for measuring the
download times of one Web page. And below is one of the results:
When traffic is going directly: 143,38 Kbps
When traffic is going through the proxy: 61Kbps

What does it mean ?
Please help.
