squidGuard is an excellent package, but it has seen no development
work in at least 18 months and the mailing list is not longer
available (preventing users from supporting users). I cannot
recommend it to a new user.
DansGuardian vs squidGuard is not an apples to apples comparison.
squidGuard is a filter, redirector and access controller plugin for
Squid. squidGuard communicates with Squid via the redirector
interface <http://www.squid-cache.org/Doc/FAQ/FAQ-15.html>.
DansGuardian is "a web content filtering proxy" that requires Squid
(or another proxy) to fetch the web pages. It filters "the actual
content of pages based on many methods including phrase matching,
PICS filtering and URL filtering." Since all content is passed
through DansGuardian for processing, it requires more hardware
resources than squidGuard to provide the same level of service.
DG does not provide access control features of its own (see
http://dansguardian.org/?page=faq, General FAQ #1), and it may "break"
your Squid acls ((see http://dansguardian.org/?page=faq,
Configuration/Usage FAQ #9). Be sure to review the DG licensing
agreement if you are in a commercial environment.
Another package you may want to consider is POESIA.
http://www.poesia-filter.org/index.htm
http://sourceforge.net/projects/poesia/
(I do not have any personal experience with Poesia.)
