You can always change the helper, or write another small helper for

You can't use whereis to locate directories. See the documentation to
whereis for a description of what whereis can locate.
If you do not find the helper in the Squid version you have installed,
then install Squid again. See configure --help for options required to
enable the NCSA basic authentication helper.
