Works here... as you my laptop does not have a fully qualified name
(moves between networks) and I must set visible_hostname in
squid.conf.
Make sure you have spelled the directive correctly and not prefixed
with a # mark... (# is used for comments).
What do you get if you runn the following commands?
grep visible_hostname /path/to/squid.conf
sh -c "/path/to/sbin/squid -X -k parse 2>&1 | grep -A4 visible"
