First verify that pam_auth is installed correctly. It needs to be
installed setuserid root to be allowed to check the password of other
users than the cache_effective_user..
To verify the PAM configuration, run pam_auth as root from the command
line, and then enter username <space> password <enter>.
To verify the full installation of pam_auth, su to the
cache_effective_user and then run pam_auth from the command line as
above.
Once the above tests are successful, try using the helper via Squid.
