I don't believe squid is causing the problem.
Perhaps there is a firewall? Or do you really have the service accepting
connections on the remote?
I have only used rsync over ssh, it has always worked well for me. Just
set up keyed authentication and you can do something similar to this:
rsync -e ssh /home/source/* remote:/home/dest/
Where remote is the remote hostname or ip. SSH runs over port 22.
