It depends. If Squid is set to use *only* HTTP NTLM authentication, and
authentication is required, and the browser does not support HTTP NTLM
authentication, then the browser will not be able to authenticate. That
result in a "cache access denied" error.
If you have also configured HTTP Basic authentication, then Squid will
offer both NTLM and Basic as HTTP authentication mechanisms. Which one the
browser chooses is up to the browser, but most browsers will choose the
"best" mechanism that they support. (Some versions of MSIE will reportedly
only consider the first HTTP authentication mechanism offered.)
