There is many methods:

 * WPAD, assuming WPAD resolution is enabled in the browser. WPAD is a
automatic means whereby the browser locates proxy configuration. This
can be configured by either DHCP or DNS.

 * Domain logon scripts which configured the proxy settings in the
browsers.

 * Transparent cacheing, automatically intercepting any requests for
port 80 and redirecting them to the proxy.
