[squid-users] Pinger over http

Is there a pinger version checking response of host using HTTP protocol
instead of ICMP?
One of my possible way leads by other w3cache server, which isn't SQUID
and doesn't support of ICP and that stuff. So the only why to check if
this way is better is to make random GET request for unexisting page to
get an error and to measure the error arrival time.

Such pinger could work as following:
- try to make following request http://ipnumber:80/rundomtext (e.g.
http://195.234.233.122/jsieowhuihdhshsnjijss)
- communicate to other w3cache
- measure the response time. The answer will be always an error but I
want to know only the latency.

Has anybody seen such thing somewhere? It could be not exactly the same
but similar.
