Modern Squids seem to do a nice job of shrinking cache_dirs without user
intervention.

I would recommend a swap.state rebuild, after it has finished shrinking,
probably, though. Just to be sure. You do this by stopping Squid,
deleting just the swap.state files in the cache_dirs and then restarting
Squid. The rebuild will take some time (hours), but will insure your
swap is correct. If you can't afford to have the box out of service
overnight, for example, then take Simon's advice and remove the
cache_dirs and start from scratch--the rebuild will happen while
providing service, but it isn't very good for anything while under heavy
load and rebuilding the swap.
