The Squid "async-io" implementation is today mostly developed using
Linux. Also runs on Solaris and maybe some other OS:es.
Without asyncronous file & directory I/O your proxy performance will be
quite serverely limited. If you are looking into sustaining more than
about 30 requests/s then some form of asyncronous file & directory I/O
is required.
Squid has two such implementations, "async-io/aufs/asyncufs" and
"diskd". "async-io" works well for Linux, "diskd" for *BSD.
