I am using RedHat 7.2, squid-2.5 and many different variants thereof, with
many different settings depending on what I am testing. All working fine in
my tests.
What I can think of is if your Squid is inside a firewall and you must use a
parent. Then Squid will feel very slow if you have forgot to tell this fact
to Squid (never_direct).
Another alternative is if your Squid server is seriously out of memory and
continously swapping, or otherwise overloaded.

Henrik
