If you are into hacking the Linux kernel, then I'd strongly recommend to
take a look at User Mode Linux
<http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net/>. Allows one to run and debug
Linux like mostly any other application... makes kernel hacking a whole
lot more fun, and it has networking. Uses it extensively while hacking
on Netfiler.
But this is diverging quite far from the scope of the Squid-Users
malinglist now. Questions on Linux kernel and implementing DS retreival
for TCP connections is more of a question for the Linux kernel hackers
list..
