I am not a guru :).
You can get most out of squid by tuning compile options.
You can do it with RPM also, provided you know how to
recompile the RPM to your taste. RPM will provide you
easy way to upgrade the packages in future.
The easiest way to go is tarballs. You have to cook up
your own init script for tarball. You can still modify
the RH script and reuse it for your tarball installaiton.
