i had similar problems, had to downgrade the kernel to 2.2.19 from 2.4.2
someone said that i should use iptables instead of ipchains.
my pattern was that "cache memory" was ever growing and then after taking
up all memory, it started slowing down. looks like kernel bug to search
through that "cache memory" slows down.
do a "vmstat 5" and check the pattern.
that's if you use linux :)
