I'm afraid you have to edit the configuration file, but
its not so hard as it might look like at the start.
Most of the options are defaults and you only need to
edit the acl lines to enable your net to use the proxy.
Squid however is much more powerful. I really dont see the
difference in editing a text file to clicking on the web
where the problem domain is somewhat complex. Only I like
the former over the latter since its a bit more secure and
you can use copy&paste :-)
To see wether the squid works or not, you can use your browser.
Error pages are in the squid installation and can also be
edited to suit your needs.
For a cache administrator it is certainly not a bad idea to
lern about the HTTP protocol, which is shown in rfc2616
