i guess i'll wait for my new boxes with more ram then.
sorry for being so pig-headed on a clear comment, but i could not believe
that
squid blows up to TEN times as big as the value in cache_mem is set to,
because
the FAQ only says it can be twice or three times as big.

FAQ entry on memory usage.
