but it is only available for Squid-2.5-alpha (which shuould run much worse than
Squid-2.3, but there might be times when it does..).

Note: This ONLY works for server acceleration, not proxies or
transparent proxies, and communication between Squid and the origin
servers will still be unencrypted HTTP.
