There are some alternatives for load balancing. As far as I know some of
them :
1- DNS load balancing (using by round-robin option): But If your cache down,
you may have some trouble because DNS couldnt perceive this situaiton.
2- you can use .pac files properly.I think It is very flexible solution .
3- L4 switching .I guess the best solution but Its too expensive.
4- You may establish cluster servers with www.linuxvirtualserver.org
