create a new squid.conf with a separate squid.pid file entry (or an entry of none). In that config put just the new cache_dir (and
not the existing ones).

now run squid with the -f option and -z.

Then edit your normal squid.conf file, add the new cache_dir to it. then run squid -k reconf...
