to repeat what i said in the next sentence:
it all has to do with what the "standard" for ethernet allows.
may i suggest that you take a read of:
"The Ethernet - A Local Area Network", version 1.0, Digital Equipment
Corporation, September 1980
and
"The Ethernet, A Local Area Network" Data Link Layer and Physical
Layer
Specifications", Digital, Intel, and Xerox, November, 1982.
while there are ways to extend the maximum-frame-size (so called "giant
frames" and "jumbo frames"), you have found that a 2600 router is not
capable of such a thing (and your unix box / network card probably wouldn't
be without specific driver enhancemts either).
