[SQU] pam_auth suddenly fails

os: solaris8
hw: 450
squid: 2.3stable4

squid has been happily authenticating users via pam_auth for sometime.
suddenly today for some reason authentications were rejected by squid.

access.log shows TCP_DENIED/407 messages???
syslog shows pam authentication failed messages.

permissions seem to be ok as pam_auth children are loaded.
4755 on pam_auth
entries in /etc/pam.conf are ok, pointing to pam_unix_so.1

help...

any ideas are greatly appreciated, rf.
