No space left on device!

Dear Squiders

I got a

2000/08/08 09:28:11| diskHandleWrite: FD 9: disk write error: (28) No space left on device
FATAL: Write failure -- check your disk space and cache.log
Squid Cache (Version 2.3.STABLE2): Terminated abnormally.

I reduced cache_dir but it seems Squid is not purging any files on startup.
Do I Have to delete them manually. Won't it corrupt the swap.log ??
