what to do if no DNS ?

I don't have DNS. (and I can't have one yet)
What to do if I want to make Squid looking up the names from the file
"/etc/hosts" instead ? Can I do that ?

to the worst case, if Squid must have a DNS server to do the lookup, is
it that 'named' is the only choice ? and how to add an entry to this
daemon ?
e.g. i want to add "abc.testing.com" --> '123.123.123.123' to it.
