It's normal that you can't use POP or SMTP to the internet, Squid is only http
proxy so no POP or SMTP proxy.
BUT!!!!
I found a great tool a time ago where you can use every tcp application behind a
http-proxy....
So also POP and SMTP
Search on www.download.com to HTTPort and try it out, read the manual and run
it.
This tools is based on https and makes connections to specific ports on the net
with CONNECT XX.
You can elliminate the use of this tools by blocking CONNECTS in Squid
