Question regarding authentication

Hello,

I have about 2000 educational users on Squid 2.3stable2 running on Mac OS X
Server 1.2. Our peek load is from 7am to 5pm during the week. We are going
to start requiring authentication (I have written a perl script to
authenticate with CommuniGate Pro Mail Servers' PWD module if anyone is
interested). My question is this.

How many authentication processes should I start? Currently I have this set
to 15. Are there any good rules to follow in determining this?

Any help would be appreciated.
