Defenitely sounds like Squid is crashing due to some bug in Squid, the
OS or the compiler used.
What is said in /usr/local/squid/logs/cache.log?
What changes did you make to squid.conf?

The default is denied, to make sure people configure appropriate access
controls to not accidently opening loopholes in their network security
by installing Squid and not caring about the configuration.
