Unable to apply patches to squid-2.3.STABLE1 before compiling

While preparing to build the latest version of squid I have attempted to
apply the available patches before compiling without success. Each attempt
has resulted from the following error:

can't find file to patch at input line 9
Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?

I have tried using the -p0 option as well as downloading the latest GNU
patch program (2.5.4) which I compiled with the option --disable-largefile.
My system is running Redhat Linux 6.0.
