I have a Squid-2.2 patch which changes Squid to simply return a
"temporary network overload" error message to the user, instead of
aborting. See http://squid.sourceforge.net/ (the patch is currently in
the SourceForge patch manager, but will be moved to my Squid pages
shortly)
Made the patch about a week ago when we had a major Internet blackout
(first connectivity to other national operators than out main operator
was lost for some time, then the link to the US), causing our customized
Squid-2.2 installations to go havoc.
