Upgrade your kernel and libc to a current version (2.2.14, glibc-2.1.1
or later). Then see http://squid.sourceforge.net/hno/.
By only upgrading the kernel to a 2.2.X release will give you 1024
filedescriptors (compared to 256 on a stock 2.0.X kernel).
Kernel 2.2.12 and later allows you to raise the limit to any level you
want using ulimit, but earlier glibc versions is not prepared to handle
more than 1024.
