There was a dnsserver bug fixed in 2.2.STABLE5. The bug allowed your
unqualified name lookup to succeed in earlier versions.

try adding -D 'cache_dns_program' in squid.conf:

        cache_dns_program /usr/local/squid/bin/dnsserver -D

Also see 'append_domain' in squid.conf.
