AFAIK, that FAQ entry is stale. The HP-UX-specific problem was solved
some time ago, and the fix is in the latest stable and development
releases. I wonder if installing Squid from scratch (as opposed to using
RPMs which sometimes are misconfigured and/or contain buggy patches) is
a good idea.
At any rate, please consider sending a bug report with stack trace and,
if possible, local variables printout to squid-bugs.
