I have seen the same problem on Alpha Linux 2.2.10 and 2.2.12 using a
tulip class NIC. It looks like it is a etherned driver or NIC problem.
Unloading the NIC driver and loading it again fixes the problem, until
it appears again.

(how I reload the NIC driver on these systems: /etc/rc.d/init.d/network
stop; rmmod tulip; /etc/rc.d/init.d/network start)
