Can you please describe more in detail what kind of problem you get
during startup?
What is said in cache.log?
If it crashes while reading swap.log, can you please make a stack trace
and send that to squid-bugs@ircache.net? (use my DebugCache script if a
core dump isn't generated)

It should make a slow rebuild from the cache files if there is no
swap.state file.
