http accelerator question

Hello:

whic are the best method of redirecting a request? I explain me : we like to
put on work a http accelerator of tree or more web server on our intranet
and make it accesible from Internet. we like to configure only one http
accelerator (reverse proxy/hosting).

I think that execute a perl command each time a request come can be a
boottleneck and eat lot of recurses (cpu/memory). similar situation whit
host_header_on I suppose.
