Don't waste your time on Linux 2.0.X kernels. Upgrade to Linux 2.2
kernel and you will get both 1024 filedescriptors and faster networking
code.
It is possible to hack Linux 2.0.X to support more than 256
filedescriptors, but it requires quite a bit of patching and include
file tuning, i.e. somewhat identical amount of work as going to Linux
2.2 (then you will need to upgrade some system software components, but
it will not require patching the kernel. I'll bet there is a FAQ
somewhere on how to upgrade Suse 5.3 to Linux 2.2).
